Each Dr. John's Candies Lollipop with Xylitol contains approximately 1/2 gram of Xylitol. At least 4 grams per day is recommended for an anti-caries effect. This is our first run at including Xylitol in our sugar free formula. The challenge is adding enough Xylitol to be tooth-friendly and keeping the "sweet" stable inside the wrapper. At this time, 1/2 gram is the maximum we could add and still maintain the shape of the candy(i.e. not melt into the wrapper). We are excited and have confidence that our fruit flavored, kid-friendly lollipops will have better patient compliance than the current retail mint-flavored gums and mints. And, we continue to research and are developing a Xylitol candy which will deliver a daily efficacious dose of Xylitol per lollipop/disc shape with minimum dosing frequency.
Please check back periodically for more exciting news on the Xylitol candies and our new "cavity fighting" Dr. John's Herbal Lollipop.
Our sugar free candy is made with the sweetener HSH in combination with Sunett®.
Unlike sugars, HSH is resistant to metabolism by oral bacteria, and is therefore safe for teeth. The usefulness of HSH as an alternative to sugar and as part of a comprehensive program including proper dental hygiene has been recognized by dental professionals.
Also, the slow and incomplete absorption of HSH after consumption does not cause a significant rise in blood glucose and insulin response. Therefore, products in which HSH replaces sugar may be of use in providing a wider variety of reduced calorie and sugar free choices to people with diabetes (on the advice of their physician).
We believe Dr. John's Candies are the best tasting sugar free candies available and are used in the prevention of decay, and as an alternative for diabetics and for xerostomia. Of course, children love the lollipops too!
Conditions or situations where dental practices are generally recommended to use Dr. John's Candies:
- Decay control in general, especially root surface, caused by a candy habit.
- As a saliva stimulant for patients with dry mouth.
- Office treats for adults and children (practice builders). How often do our adult patients receive a "perk" following their dental visit? This tasty treat is especially appreciated after etchants, anesthetics, hemostatics, and varnishes.
- Parents or persons desiring sugar free candy for health or other reasons such as weight loss or smoking cessation.
- Persons with diabetes (on the advise of their physician.)
All of Dr. John's sugar free hard candies (lollipops, fruit candies, sour balls, and starlite mints) are fat free, reduced calorie and cause no G.I. upset.*
*Excessive consumption of soft candies (taffy and caramels) may have a laxative effect in sensitive individuals.
